Sumit Kumar joined the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) in the year 1994 subsequent to his selection in Civil Service examination in 1993. Prior to this he was a Journalist (op-ed page editor & feature writer) with the newspaper Economic Times, New Delhi and an UGC National Research Scholar in International Studies. His schooling is from Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, B Sc (Hons) from Science College, Patna, MA in International Studies, from School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, LLB from Faculty of Law, Delhi University, and MPA from New York University, USA. An alumni of National Defense College and a recipient of National Research Fellowship (JRF) from UGC and NET qualified to teach in the area of International studies and South Asian Studies. He had stints in the Ministry of Finance, Central Board of Excise & Customs, Tax Tribunal (CESTAT), Centre of Excellence (COE), various field formations of CBEC in various capacities in the last two decades.
Prior to joining as Commissioner of Customs, Cochin and Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) Kochi he was at Centre of Excellence and before that Staff Officer (OSD) to the Chairman & Special Secretary, CBEC, Department of Revenue handling among other charges the area pertaining to GSTN. He is a member of 56th Batch of National Defense College, New Delhi.
