The Customs at ACC, Cochin has made a seizure of Silver weighing 38.25 Kgs valued Rs 16,50,269/- One passenger, who arrived from Dubai by flight No. EK 532 dated 10.07.13, residing at Moovattupuzha had sent his unaccompanied Baggage to Air Cargo Complex and filed a baggage declaration for the clearance of one package imported by flight No. EK 532 dated 19.07.13. The passenger mis-declared the goods as 'Nickel Crom materials' to mislead the customs officers and did not declare any value for it. When the package was opened and examined by the Customs 0fficers on 20.7.2013, it was found to contain white metal pieces of various shapes and sizes, and that on suspicion that the metal pieces contain silver, representative samples were drawn and forwarded for chemical examination at Customs Laboratory. The examination reports from the customs Laboratory, confirmed samples as silver with a purity 99.3 to 99.6%. The contents of the package was weighed and found to be 38.25Kgs (Net) and 40.025Kgs (Gross) the value of the said silver is Rs. 16,50,269.The goods were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, on the reasonable belief that they are liable for confiscation under the provisions of the said Act. This is for the first time, ever since, such a major seizure of valuable contraband seized from Air Cargo Complex. The pax is otherwise also not eligible for import of silver through unaccompanied baggage for the offence committed. The pax was arrested today.
